Citing sources correctly in a research paper involves two components: (1) in-text citations — brief references inserted at the point where you use a source; (2) reference list / bibliography — complete source details at the end. This guide covers APA 7th, MLA 9th, and IEEE — the three most commonly required styles in Indian universities and journals.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Click a question to expand the answer.

The citation format depends on your discipline and institution: APA 7th Edition — Psychology, Education, Social Sciences, Business, Nursing. MLA 9th Edition — Humanities, English Literature, Arts. IEEE — Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics. Chicago/Turabian — History, Arts, Architecture. Harvard — Common in UK/Australia for all disciplines. When in doubt, check your university's or journal's submission guidelines — they will specify the required citation style.

APA in-text citations use the author-date format: (Author, Year). Examples: (Smith, 2021) for a work with one author. (Smith & Jones, 2021) for two authors. (Smith et al., 2021) for three or more authors. Direct quote: (Smith, 2021, p. 45). If the author is mentioned in the sentence: Smith (2021) found that... Page numbers are required only for direct quotes, not for paraphrases in APA.

APA 7 journal article reference: Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Year). Title of article. Title of Journal (italicised), Volume(Issue), page range. https://doi.org/XXXX. Example: Creswell, J. W., & Plano Clark, V. L. (2018). Designing and conducting mixed methods research. Thousand Oaks: SAGE. For journal articles, always include the DOI if available. If no DOI, include the journal homepage URL.

IEEE uses a numbered citation system. In-text: References are cited as superscript numbers or numbers in square brackets [1] in the order they first appear in the text. Reference list: Numbered sequentially [1], [2], [3]... Reference format for journal: [1] A. Author, "Title of article," Journal Abbreviation, vol. X, no. Y, pp. Z–ZZ, Month Year. For conference paper: [2] A. Author, "Title," in Proc. Conference Name, City, Year, pp. Z–ZZ. IEEE style is common in engineering, CS, and technology research papers and IEEE journal submissions.

Footnotes for citations are used in Chicago Notes-Bibliography style. In Chicago format: a superscript number in the text corresponds to a footnote at the bottom of the page giving the full or short citation. After the first full citation, shortened forms are used (Author, Short Title, page). APA and MLA do NOT use footnotes for citations — they use in-text parenthetical citations. IEEE uses bracketed numbers. Check your required citation style before using footnotes for citations.

Citing a website: APA 7: Author, A. (Year, Month Day). Title of page. Site Name. URL. Example: Ministry of Education. (2020, July 29). National education policy 2020. Government of India. https://www.education.gov.in. MLA 9: Author (if known). "Title of Page." Site Name, Day Month Year, URL. IEEE: [3] Author, "Title of page," Site Name. [Online]. Available: URL. [Accessed: Month Day, Year].
